Tamara King appears to have joined the Winnipeg Sun as their new crime reporter in the wake of Chris Kitching’s departure.

Best be on your guard!

UPDATE –

It now occurs to me that virtually every major media outlet in Winnipeg now boasts a woman as their front-line police reporter.

With King at the Sun, there’s Gabrielle Giroday at the Freep, Stacey Ashley at CTV and Gosia Sawicka at CBC. One supposes with the great work she’s done regarding the Winnipeg police at Shaw, Meera Bahadoosingh should also be counted.

That really leaves only Mike McIntyre at the Freep and Jeff Keele at Global [unsure if he’s labeled a ‘crime reporter,’ but he’s got the background] as the guys on the crime beat, and Mike, like Dean Pritchard from the Sun, is way more court-oriented than a police beat guy.

Interesting times.

  1. You forgot to include yourself in that list, James.

I really only pay attention to you, Mike, and Gabrielle for anything crime/police/courts related, as I know I’ll get better stories with the most meat.

Although I’m curious to see Shaw’s documentary they did with the police.

The Sun basically turns every item in the WPS media release into a story. Case in point, here’s their current lineup on their website from today:

    – Alleged arson blamed on grow op
    – River search for boy resumes
    – Pedestrian killed in crash named
    – Police seek damaged silver sedan after hit-and-run
    – Kidnapping charges considered after Tyndall Park robbery, assault
    – Student faces knife charge after school lockdown
    – Teen jailed in drug-deal stabbing
    – Helped by cops, man spits back
    – Weapons bust
    – Serious crash on Portage
    – Man accused of assaulting cop
    – Hit and run injures dad
    – Man abducted, robbed

… and that’s all in a row, going down their Winnipeg news section on their site! Yikes.

  2. Thanks for the complement, but I can’t be counted in the list [sadly] because I’m not a full-timer. More of a part-time cherry-picker!

Tomorrow morning’s story, however, should get some eyeballs. We’ll see.
